December 13, 2015 | Advent III Year C

Wow, here we are, Advent III!
How did that happen?

Here is the last Advent III, Year C
Not sure there is more to add here but let's see...

Zephaniah 3:14-20

Canticle 9
Philippians 4:4-7
Luke 3:7-18

I think Aimee Mann's Save Me might be the icing on the cake:

Ruth 3:1-5; 4:13-17

Mark 12:38-44
Mark 12:38-44

Open my heart Sunday.

Here is the list from the last year B.

I'm reminded that for some these selections seem like a big stretch.

Maybe the first step is something instrumental at communion. Something with a different feel.

A couple good suggestions:

Ashokan Farewell by Jay Ungar.
Piano arrangement available here and lead sheets here.

January Rain by David Gray
Piano arrangement here—chords too for guitar or other strings.

November 1, 2015 | All Saints' Year B

Wisdom of Solomon 3:1-9
or Isaiah 25:6-9
Psalm 24
Revelation 21:1-6a
John 11:32-44

I am amazed, every year, at the depth and breadth of songs to choose from for this day.

AND (Edited 11/1), can't believe I forgot these TWO that we offered today:

Sand and Water by Beth Nielson Chapman

Ripple by Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter

Here is the playlist from 2012.

This year we will sing a long time Grace favorite, Crossing the Bar. Rani Arbo is a wonder.
I think we've been singing this song at Grace for over 15 years. So very beautiful. Happy and surprised to see SO many choral versions on the Youtube. Here's a very sweet version.

Many a Mumford and Sons song that work. Two that stand out: After the Storm and Timshel.

Lazarus this year. We've decided to sing Rise by Eddie Vedder. Another favorite, here with additional lyrics by Scott Lawrence.

Such is the way of the world, can never know.
Just where to put all your faith, and how will it grow.
Gonna rise up, burning black holes in dark memories.
Gonna rise up, turning mistakes into gold.

Such is the passage of time, too fast to fold.
Suddenly swallowed by signs, lo and behold.
Gonna rise up and find my direction magnetically.
Gonna rise up and throw down my ace in the hole.

Such are the stories we bring, telling the toll.
Laughter and tears fill the sky, echo below.
Gonna rise up and stand in the light that I cannot see.
Gonna rise up and live all the stories I know.

Such are the songs that we sing, fears to unfold.
Music, like water, wells up, unbending our soul.
Gonna rise up and fly from the tomb that’s been holding me. Gonna rise up and sing myself a new home.

Two of our high schoolers will sing Sia's Lullaby. More open and abstract then some of the others. I love this song.

She's 10.

In that moment I felt as humbled and blessed as Job.

September 13, 2015, Pentecost 16 | Proper 19B

Today is our Homecoming Sunday. I've mentioned some home songs in older posts here.

Wisdom of Solomon 7:26-8:1

For wisdom is a reflection of eternal light,
a spotless mirror of the working of God,
and an image of his goodness.

Although she is but one, she can do all things,
and while remaining in herself, she renews all things;
in every generation she passes into holy souls
and makes them friends of God, and prophets;
for God loves nothing so much as the person who lives with wisdom.

She is more beautiful than the sun,
and excels every constellation of the stars.

Compared with the light she is found to be superior,
for it is succeeded by the night,
but against wisdom evil does not prevail.
She reaches mightily from one end of the earth to the other,
and she orders all things well.

From Wikipedia:  a song written by Billy Preston and Bruce FisherDennis Wilson of the Beach Boys contributed to the song's genesis, but his official credit was omitted. It was first recorded by Preston and made popular by Joe Cocker. Preston who grew up playing the organ in church, originally wrote the lyrics about God.

Holy One, help us to know you:
in bread—broken;
in wisdom—spoken,
and in love—remembered.

Trying to keep it simple this week. Sometimes it feels like we try too hard.
Lovely and pleasant sounds just right.

Today is a big day! We will welcome the Rev. Tommy Dillon as Rector today at Grace. The music will include some traditional hymns, some contemporary hymns and some relevant pop music—you know, our usual Grace fare. Welcome Tommy!!

The service looks like this so far. There will be a few surprises too. I'll let you in on those later in the month. Especially excited about the surprises! :)

Addition, July 21. The surprises:

One of prodigal daughters, Olivia, sang Like a Prayer, you know that old Madonna song. I hear there is a video out there and will post it soon. It was exquisite. "Life is a mystery...and it feels like home."

Two of our Grace high schoolers, sisters Nina and Josie, sang Naive Melody by the Talking Heads—"Home is where I want to be...I know I've got plenty of time..." It was a beautiful gift of welcome!

We are saving Peace Train for our Homecoming Sunday in September!

Jim Friedrich, who blogs here, will be our preacher and celebrant this week.
Jim is a religious imagineer—a creative liturgist, preacher and musician. It is a honor and pleasure to work with, and be inspired by him!

Jim threw me some ideas about uncertainty and faith. Good ones to explore.
